1799 - Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Ottomans at Aboukir, Egypt.
1994 - Israel and Jordan signed a declaration that ended their 46-year state of war. A formal peace treaty was signed on October 26.
2000 - U.S. President Clinton announced that the leaders of Israel and the Palestinians had been unable to reach an agreement "at this time." The two groups had been talking at Camp David, MD, for two weeks.
